Best Halloween Decorations for Kids

If you’ve ever had a toddler whose taste in Halloween costumes leans towards furry animals and bejeweled tutus, you know that trick-or-treating can be a scary prospect. Blood-soaked zombies are enough to send them wailing. The sight of a witches cauldron can be terrifying. And do have any idea how many questions one single ghost can inspire?

So for anyone who wants to be kind to their littlest Halloween guests (or who has some in their house), here are some ideas for creating outdoor Halloween displays that celebrate the season without scaring the dickens out of them. They rely on a combination of unusually decorated pumpkins (and other members of the squash family) and energy efficient LED Halloween lights to show off your work.

If you’re doing this with kids, first check to see if you can find a U-pick pumpkin patch in your area. They’re usually a great and affordable place to stock up on pumpkins, squash and gourds of all shapes and sizes that you can use to decorate your yard. Plus, kids love hunting under a thatch of leaves to find them. Don’t confine yourself to just orange round pumpkins – look for other vegetables to add a variety of shapes and interest.

Now, decorate your cornucopia. If you want to make jack-o-lanterns, follow these instructions for using LED lights as a safer alternative to candles. They last longer and you don’t have to worry about whether the pumpkins get knocked over or costumes stray too close. Or if the idea of carving and scooping all of those innards out seems overwhelming, here are some other ideas for decorating your vegetables. You can paint your pumpkin with materials as simple as tempura paint, newspaper, masking tape and yogurt containers. Or look for glow-in-the-dark paint and glitter to gussy up your gourds.

Once you’ve decorated your pumpkins, arrange them around your front yard in clusters, or along walkways, or whatever makes the most sense for your home. You can spotlight your pumpkin art with LED spotlights, which come in appropriate Halloween colors like purple, orange and green. Or you can simply weave these strings of purple 5mm wide angle bulbs among the pumpkins—the brightest and most focused of our LED Halloween lights that evenly distributes the light in all directions. Another good choice to show off your handiwork is the orange Halloween light set on black wire, a small efficient bulb that produces a nice bright light.

With your ghoul-free yard, you’ll have the good will of every toddler’s mom in the neighborhood.
