Christmas Light Recycling Program

LED Christmas lights are the environmentally responsible choice for Christmas and decorative lighting. However, throwing old incandescent lights in the landfill is not a great for the environment. Christmas lights contain many components that can be recycled and re-used so there is no reason to just throw them away. To help customer's with an environmentally friendly solution for disposing of their old Christmas lights we've established a Christmas light recycling program. Each year for a few months before and after Christmas we accept old lights for recycling and provide a coupon good for 25% of any purchase of LED Christmas lights at our store.

When is Christmas Light Recycling Available?

Our recycling program is a seasonal program which generally begins in October and concludes at the end of January or early February. The exact dates for the program vary somewhat from year to year.

Common Questions About Our Program

What's the best way to package and ship my lights?

You should package your lights in a used or recycled box without any packaging material. Just put your light strings in the box and don't include anything else. Don't worry about the lights getting broken in shipping because we are just going to put them in a shredder and chop them up anyway. You may ship the lights via any method you like but there's no hurry so just send them by the least expensive option available. As long as your shipment is post marked prior to the conclusion of our program your submission will be accepted so expedited shipping is never necessary.

How do I get my coupon and what is it good for?

We'll email your coupon as soon as you complete our recycling program form. The coupon is good for 25% off any purchase at LEDChristmasLights.com. The coupons are good through 12/31 of the year following issuance. The coupons may not be used in conjunction with any other coupon or discoutn.

How are the lights recycled?

We've partnered with a local recycling company. When we receive your lights we remove them from the box and put them in a giant bin with all of the other lights we receive. The recycling company picks these up on a regular basis and takes them to their recycling facility. There, the lights are placed in a commercial shredder (kind of like a giant paper shredder) and shreds the lights up into little pieces. This is done so that the lights may more easily be separated into lots of the various materials that make up the lights including PVC plastic, glass and copper. The recycling company separates the shredded lights into the various components and then further processes them in preparation to sell the commodity components on the open market to manufacturers who use these commodity components to make new products.

Can I drop my lights off for recycling rather than mailing them?

We welcome people who live in are area to drop off their lights for recycling at our collection location. However, we ask that you carefully consider the cost and environmental impact of driving vs. mailing the lights. If you drop off your lights in person you will still have to complete our online form to receive your coupon. No one is available at our recycling collection center to issue coupons.

Do you have any other tips for participating in your program?

We encourage people to talk to their neighbors, church members, co-workers or other groups and try to organize a group collection of lights for recycling. It is much cheaper for all who participate to send the lights to us in bulk and sending one large shipment rather than several small shipments is more environmentally friendly.

Are there any other locations where I can drop off my lights?

We do not currently have any other Christmas light recycling centers. There are other companies who offer Christmas light recycling so we suggest that you conduct an internet search and see if you can find a light recycling company in your area. You should also try contacting local recycling centers or companies and inquire if they accept old Christmas lights for recycling.
